Jeff Robertson (not pictured), 161st Force Support Squadron readiness officer and student flight officer-in-charge explains the purpose of the student flight: “It [student flight] is a transition period from the time the students swear in until they leave for boot camp. We want them to soak up as much knowledge as possible about the unit, about the Air Force. This way they will have familiar faces to greet them when they come home.”

Copper 5 was the call sign for a Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker aerial refueling jet from the 161st that was involved in a mid-air collision with a civilian plane, killing the four person aircrew on Mar. 13, 1982.
