Welding the New Fitness Center

Jaime Covarrubia, S & H Steel Co. iron worker, welds the outrigger on the fitness center, 161st Air Refueling Wing, Phoenix, Jan. 27, 2015. The welding flame can reach up to 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. “They use electricity to melt the composite stick in order to bond the pieces of the outrigger together,” said Briston Construction, LLC general contractor Jerome Padgett. “It takes 12-16 subcontractors to complete a project this size.” 1st Lt. Jonathan Stratton, 161st Civil Engineering Squadron deputy base civil engineer, says of the fitness center project started in November of 2014: “We are ahead of schedule, on budget, and I’m happy with the quality.” (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Tech.
